New Music Trends: Pandora & Spotify

Stephanie Griffin

The music industry has been affected by the increase of the internet and technology over the past decade. A growing trend we are seeing is the popularity of streaming music programs now available on computers and smart phones. They are changing the way we purchase (or do not purchase) music, what we are listening to, and where we can listen to music. According to one of our readings this week, "At least 33 million people have tried Spotify, more than 150 million have registered for Pandora" (Sisario). Although Ben Sisario's article demonstrates some negative aspects of these programs through a financial standpoint, this blog focuses on how programs like Pandora Radio and Spotify may have positive affects on both the music and radio industries.

Spotify in particular allows us to connect our listening history to Facebook. Eliot V. Buskirk of Hollywood Reporter mentions the increase popularity of Spotify through the social media connection. He states, “Facebook integration seems to be working well for Spotify based on its September numbers. Whether it can keep that up next month is another story -- and from where we're sitting, largely depends on whether Spotify can convince people to use its upcoming Private Listening feature when they don't want to share, rather than disconnecting Spotify from Facebook permanently” (Buskirk). In most cases, people are not ashamed to share what they are listening to on Spotify. Furthermore, anything that is easily connected to social media can readily become an active part of our online activity. Therefore, think if you have been using these programs to listen to music. Why are you using them and where are you using them the most? Furthermore, in response to the trade publication analyzing this combination of programs and social media, do you feel these programs are a good or bad technology for today’s musicians? Considering how accessible computers, smart phones, and even tablets are becoming, we are able to take our information anywhere we go- this includes our music. Not only has technology changed the way we listen to music, but the music industry itself has also been forced to modernize to stay in business.

We have established how these streaming programs are forcing the music industry to become digital. NY Times writer, Eric Pfanner, writes in his article, "Music Industry Braces for the Unthinkable,” about how the music industry has certainly taken a financial hit with the increase of online piracy and illegal downloads. Yet, the streaming programs of Spotify, along with Rdio and Deezer could save the music industry. He writes,

“Around the world, 10 million people have already signed up for subscription-based online services from Spotify, Rdio and Deezer, some of which have attracted additional millions of users with free, advertising-supported services. Many executives hope the growth of offerings like these can reduce the industry’s dependence on sales of individual tracks through digital stores like Apple iTunes, a model that has attracted little interest from young music fans, particularly outside the United States. Music executives say Internet service providers hold the key to solving the piracy problems and helping the music companies recoup lost revenue” (Pfanner).

In response to Pfanner’s statement, why do you think the online streaming programs target specifically young music fans like our generation through aspects like social media? Does this mean we will affect how the music industry works in the future? As the music industry adapts to such technological changes, the radio industry may not be far behind.
Not only are programs like Pandora and Spotify affecting the opportunities for audiences to buy music since these programs are free, they are also competing against today’s radio industry. According to our Arbitron reading from this week, radio is still listened to frequently amongst audiences ("Radio Today 2012”). Even with the streaming programs of Pandora and Spotify, “Americans depend on radio as a reliable media companion” (“Radio Today: 2012”). Do you agree with the Arbitron research study even with these programs growing popularity? Why or why not?  Although we’ve learned how radio was forced to change its format upon the arrival of television, it is important to consider the future of the music and radio industries with the increase of online music programs like Pandora and Spotify.

With the enhancements of streaming music programs, the future of the music industry will inevitably be affected. According to the journal article, “The Future of the Music Industry” by Bohdan and Anastasia Pikas, along with Candice Lymburner, music programs like Pandora and Spotify are a benefit for the music industry since they allow audiences to discover new artists. The authors state, “As more music downloads become available at little or no cost, and file sharing continues to grow, people will be exposed to a much larger array of bands, artists, and even genres of music. With the opportunity of increased exposure at the expense of lost song profits, artists all over the world may reap the benefits in other ways, including that of larger audiences at their live concerts” (Pikas, Pikas, and Lymburner 142). In other words, even though music listeners can now listen to most music online free, they are still likely to contribute to the artists’ revenue through attending concerts and buying merchandise. What do you think about this idea of the future of the music industry with Pandora and Spotify program offering this newly digital service of listening music?

  1. Stephanie,

I enjoyed reading your explanation and analysis on music streaming services, specifically the popular Pandora and Spotify. It was particularly interesting for myself because I am frequent user of both of these services, as well as other music streaming services such as iHeartRadio. I am a free user of Pandora, but I am paying subscribing of Spotify. In fact, I am listening to music from Spotify as I type this blog post. When I first heard about Spotify when it initially began to gain buzz and popularity, I was wary of it. Could a music service really be able to provide you with any song of your choosing on demand? The answer is mostly a yes (not every song you could ever imagine is available on Spotify, but nearly enough are).

I began using Spotify on my PC laptop as free subscriber. I found it to be user friendly and the ads were not as bothersome or as frequent as I thought they would be. I made the decision to purchase Spotify premium after I began using my iPhone and specifically my iPad for music streaming, As a free Spotify user you can download a Spotify application from Apple and Android devices, but with these apps one can only use the radio service Spotify offers; one cannot pick and choose artists, albums and songs at will. As a paying user I am able to do these things on the app. I can even pick songs to make available offline so that I do not need an internet connection or to be forced to use my data plan when listening to music from the app. As a paying subscriber, I can do everything from the Spotify app that I would be able to do on a laptop. Also as a subscriber, ads are eliminated from my listening experience.

I feel that my use of Spotify and my reason for switching to becoming a premium user is indicative of a trend that will continue to grow. More and more people are using phones and tablets in place of computers. They need a way to be able to listen to music that is cost effective and services like Pandora and Spotify provide such an option. From about ten dollars a month I am able to listen to an unlimited amount of music through Spotify. In the iTunes Store ten dollars may not even buy you a full album. While illegal downloading is still popular, it is more difficult for user to illegally download music using the mobile platforms supported by many phones and tablets. Pandora and Spotify offer more music at a cheap price. As smart phones and tablets continue to rise in use and popularity, I feel that music streaming applications will follow suit.

    1. There is one issue that you have briefly brought up in your blog post that would effect the increase in use of these applications and that is profitability. The McCourt and Burkart article, which goes into details on the first popular on-line music service, Napster, predicts "large catalogs also would require on-line subscription services to negotiate separate licensing deals with potentially hundreds of record companies, thousands of music publishers, numerous codec license holders, and developers of copy-protection software, all of whom will seek a portion of revenues" (McCourt, 295). Unfortunately according to Ben Sisario of the Media Decoder Blog, their prophecy is coming to fruition. Spotify's "cost of sales" in the last year or its cost for "licensing fees and distribution expenses" was about 97 percent of its revenue. McCourt and Burkart suggest that for music subscription services to be successful, "subscription prices would need to make up in volume what is lost in profitability, suggesting cost pressures and even price wars among music services." Currently there do not appear to be enough priced music subscription services for competitive pricing to come into play. But perhaps if the services do continue to maintain popularity, others services will emerge. This could lead to price wars and further profitability for music streaming services.

    Stephanie-

I thought this was an extremely relevant and interesting topic to discuss. The music industry has expanded its options of listening and audiences are staring to catch on to the new craze of streaming music programs. Both Pandora and Spotify are programs that numerous people in out generation have grown to use on a daily basis, either through free listening to personal subscriptions. I think that we may see these sites and other similar to them rise in popularity in the next few years to come as radio has made its way online and onto our personal devices.
The article, “Madonna Crowned Top Music Earner in 2012 Due to World Tour” discusses how online streaming and purchasing of music is really only popular with our generation and the one before us; older generations still have not caught on to the new methods of getting music. This is why some seasoned veterans in the music industry have still been claiming the top spots in annual revenue because their listeners are still purchasing their albums and concert tickets, as well as various merchandise items. Billboard editorial analyst Glenn Peoples states, “Yet even in the coming years, as streaming services become a more important revenue source, possibly replacing digital downloads and CD sales, one thing is unlikely to change: concerts will have the greatest influence of top earners’ overall earnings.” Although this free or low-prices music streaming sites will gain popularity over the years, they will not bring in as much revenue for the performer or company as will other methods that have been around for many years, namely concerts and merchandise sales.
I think it was a great point to bring up how Spotify has chosen to partner with Facebook as far as getting their name out there and connecting similar music listeners. Currently, social media networks are among the most popular forms of connecting with friends, receiving information, and posting personal information about current events and ideas. Facebook has been the primary social media network since shortly after its creation in 2004 and seems like the obvious choice to start for a small company such as Spotify. The article, “Pandora and Spotify Rake in the Money and Then Send It Off in Royalties” mentioned how much the sites rely on advertising for the growth in their users and incoming revenue. By advertising their owns sites on social media networks as well as allowing companies to purchase advertising spots on their playlists and web pages, they are working to increase the revenue and knowledge of the sites, hoping to continuously gain users. Personally, I only use Pandora of the two sites simply because of word of mouth as well as an advertisement I saw on Facebook; also, I know that Spotify has a cost associated with it, which is why I have not looked further into using that site.

    1. Spotify has a small subscription fee where it gets most of its revenue from. The Sisario article mentions that around “15 million people log onto the site at least once a month, and four million pay the subscription rate of about $5 to $10 a month. It seems as though the increase of users would lead to overall success of the company; however, this is not the case because most of the money these sites receive has to go straight to the music companies because of royalty rights.
I believe that eventually, the companies may lower their royalty right fees if the increase in users and revenue of these sites exponentially grows. By these sites having a small fee associated with them, they make it reasonable enough to purchase as well as cater to the individual’s personal music interests that could lead to a decrease in illegally downloading music.

    Stephanie,
To start out I want to say you make some excellent points about the music industry and programs like Pandora. I am fully behind you on the comment you made about the trend of music programs on computers. I personally use music programs such as Pandora and Spotify on my phone on a daily basis. You also make an excellent point when you talk about the integration of Spotify into social media with your quote from the Hollywood Reporter that was written Elliot V. Buskirk (Buskirk). There are many times that I will log onto Facebook and see ads all over the place for programs such as Pandora and Spotify. Being that these programs are now trending, in an article entitled “Pandora and Spotify Rake in the Money and Then Send It Off in Royalties” by Ben Sisario it states “Spotify, on the other hand, made 83 percent of its revenue from subscriptions, according to the filings in Luxembourg where its parent company, Spotify Technology is incorporated” (Sisario). With the fact that a program such as Spotify seems to be doing so well, I really think that this program and programs like it are doing the industry very well. Even with such programs like these there is still money to be made. To me this feels like an adaptation of technology with the times. We are moving into more and more advanced technology day by day.
I want to now address the question that deals with the why and where. The why is because it is music on the go for me. I’m usually at the gym and I really don’t have any music on my iTunes, so streaming either Pandora or Spotify is always a good option. For the final question that dealt with the technology being good or bad for the musicians, I feel that this could be a great thing for musicians. For example, when I have Spotify on at the gym, I will often times hear a new artist that I have never heard before or an artist that I have heard very little of, and found out that I really enjoy. Just going off of that I could be inspired to buy a new artists album, or song off of iTunes.
I want to now answer one of the questions about the Arbitron part of the article. Within the Arbitron class reading it states “Radio is unique in its ability to reach people wherever they are: at home, at work, in the car- nearly everywhere” (“Radio Today 2012”). I firmly think that these programs are a nice compliment to regular radio. Programs such as these are just another way for radio, in the music aspect, to reach people. From my personal view I really don’t agree with the Arbitron research. I feel that most of the time I am using a CD, or am streaming music on my phone, not specifically listening to the radio. Most of the people who are older in my life, such as my parents and my grandparents are always listening to the radio. I believe that the newer generations are using technology such as Pandora and Spotify, and the older generations are still using radio, like they grew up with. In closing I would like to answer the closing question in the post. Overall I think that these programs will help shape and mold the music industry in a positive direction.

  4. Streaming Music - Kimberly Rizzitano

New technology has affected many types of entertainment however, the music industry in particular has seen its effects. Like you mentioned in your blog, there has been a rise in popularity of Spotify and Pandora. The internet has essentially changed the way we access and listen to music. Musicians now have Youtube pages linking you to their music videos. They even have Facebook pages and Twitter accounts. In order to stay current and in the mainstream, most musicians and record companies appear to have integrated their music with the internet.

In response to Pfanner’s statement, online streaming programs targets younger fans through social media because social media is so intergrated into our lives, it is an easy way to access us and to get our attention. The article, “Madonna Crowned Top Music Earner in 2012” notes that streaming music online has not yet caught on with older generations (Reuters). This type of technology becomes popular with younger generations because they have been born into this technology age. There is a little less of a learning curve and more of an immediate interest in streaming because it is something new. Additionally, most young people today, according to the reading, “Rethinking the Music Industry”, are part of the social media and that participatory culture is on the rise and more and more companies are emerging that link music listening to social media. “The precise practices of participatory audiences will continue to evolve, but the shift toward greater participation is likely irreversible,” (179, Byam). The music industry is essentially reinventing and evolving itself along with society in order to fit the needs and desires of the public. Streaming and similar technologies will indeed effect how the music industry functions because since a fan no longer has to buy a CD or even an iTunes song, the music industry must come up with new ways of bringing in revenue.

As you mentioned, listeners have been opened up to new artists and genres by means of things sucj as Spotify and Pandora and it has been at the expense of the music industry. I agree that it allows new musicians to connect with an audience because they are able to see a new name that come up in relation to a musician you are currently listening to. The article, “Pandora and Spotify Rake In the Money and Then Send It Off in Royalties”, notes how costly licensing agreements with record companies have been and how they hope for the cost to go down. Since programs like Spotify must send royalty checks to the record companies, they do not cause such significant damage like piracy does. As technology continues to evolve, expenses have the potential to be worked out in favor of the public since music will continue to be streamed and shared on a social media platform. This type of technology is only in its beginnings and we can expect to see it grow further and continue to benefit audiences by sharing new artists and songs through streaming.
